1911<$10> PR65 PCGS. Proofs of this year are of the earlier matte variety, as was used in 1908, and they show a distinctive "mustard" coloration, as Akers calls it. The surfaces of this specimen have a dark, fine, sandblast finish. This piece is identifiable for pedigree purposes by an unusual obverse appearance consisting of a mustard-gold color on the left side and a deep gray-gold color on the right half. One tiny toning fleck is seen under the S of TRUST on the reverse. The matte surfaces are still exquisite and attractive with everything boldly defined throughout.
In 1911, only 95 proof Tens were reportedly struck and surviving examples are among the rarest of all 20th century gold issues. Akers (1980) only recorded 14 auction appearances over the 37 years he surveyed major gold sales, and estimates of survivors have generally been in the range of 20 pieces. We believe, however, that a somewhat larger number exists and estimate that today there are approximately 30-45 pieces in all grades. Population: 6 in 65, 5 finer (10/05).
