1911 $10 PR64 NGC. In 1911, only 95 proof Tens were reportedly struck and, like the preceding 1910, surviving examples are among the rarest of all 20th century gold issues. Akers (1980) only recorded 14 auction appearances over the 37 years he surveyed major gold sales, and estimates of survivors have generally been in the range of 20 pieces. We believe, however, that a somewhat larger number exists and estimate that today there are approximately 30-45 pieces in all grades.
Proofs of this year are of the earlier matte variety, as are all the following years as well, and they show a distinctive "mustard" coloration, as Akers calls it. The surfaces have a dark, fine, sandblast finish. This piece is identifiable for pedigree purposes by a minute surface mark to the right of the final A of AMERICA at the rim. A series of shallow, but grade-limiting shiny spots are located on the Indian's hair curl and feathers. However, these are only visible as the coin is tilted under a light. The matte surfaces are still exquisite and attractive with everything boldly defined throughout. Lot:8911
