This is the nicest illustration of Santa Claus we have ever handled. It is a pen and ink drawing circa late 1800s to early 1900s. It is definitely a drawing not a print. On the back is information reading 4 Col. Sunday Fiction note to engraver turn 3 out 4 Col. Mag. Sunday FRB original ink and pencil drawing for newspaper. The drawing is charming, it shows Santa making a delivery of toys and dolls to a boy and girl and their mother, they look as though Christmas might not have happened if Santa and the delivery man had not shown up. Mom looks worried with the weight of financial problems. I do not see a signature, unless the back holds a clue. The drawing measures . There is some light toning to the paper and some smudge streaks from the original pencil or pen use. Overall in good condition. It does remind me of some other famous Santa illustrations but I am not sure who to attribute it to, some famous ones are Thomas Nast (but his Santas seem rounder) Everett Shinn, Al Hirschfeld, Arthur Rackham or ? Perhaps you will know, either way not question wonderful and talented. A charming early piece of American Christmas art.
