1910's-20's Fenway Park & Boston Red Sox Archive
1910's-20's Fenway Park & Boston Red Sox Legal Document Archive. Voluminous archive might take a law degree to fully comprehend, but those baseball historians fascinated with the Ruth-era Red Sox and the birth of their storied ballpark will find much to love here. All derives from the private estate of Harry Frazee, the former Sox owner whose ignominious claim to fame is the sale of the young Babe to the New York Yankees in 1920. A letter of provenance from noted boxing sportswriter Bert Sugar attests to the original purchase of the archive in 1976. Dozens of pages include original lease booklets (unsigned) and mortgage documents, and a 1914 income tax return. A very early map pictures the "Red Sox B.B. Park" with its grandstand entrance on Jersey Street. Various documents of trust regard assorted shareholders. Perhaps most intriguing is a folder listing player salaries for the 1918 season, with Ruth earning $5,000 for his efforts. Also in this folder is a triple-signed Harry Frazee check. This is quite dense, highly technical paperwork, so we're surely missing something, perhaps of tremendous historical import, but we'll have to let legal minds greater than our own make that determination. There is certainly a significant amount of information to digest here, and the dedicated Boston baseball historian will have a real feast on his hands should he walk away with this lot. All documents show a degree of expected wear but remain solid and complete with nothing that could accurately be described as "damage." All signatures from various lawyers, trustees and executives remain in terrific condition. We strongly recommend that interested parties visit our Dallas offices for lot viewing prior to the auction if at all possible in order to explore the archive themselves. LOA from PSA/DNA.
