1910-D $5 MS67 NGC. This is one of the finest Indian Half Eagles we have seen, regardless of date. The fact that this is a scarce, lower mintage issue only adds to the overall importance of this offering. NGC and PCGS have combined to certify just 19 examples of the entire design type in MS67 grade with none finer. These two grading services have certified five examples of this issue in MS67 quality. We suspect that there may be some resubmission involved.
Just 193,600 examples of this issue were originally struck in Denver, and survivors in all Mint State grades are elusive. There was a hoard of several hundred examples located in Europe in 1979, according to David Akers (Walter Breen suggested the total was 283 coins and that these were found in 1980). Akers suggested that a number of Gem quality examples were known to him, and indicated that the best of the lot is probably the former Norweb Collection coin.
This example appears to be the equal of the Norweb coin, and may be the single finest known example of the date. It is sharply struck and has highly lustrous and frosty rose and yellow-gold coloration with hints of peripheral light green toning. There is a tiny mark on the cheek, and a couple minor blemishes on the reverse. Prior to this offering, a single MS65 example and four MS64 coins were the finest offered in any of our Signature sales over the past dozen years. The collector who is seeking the ultimate Indian half eagles for a date or type collection would do well to consider this lovely Superb Gem. Population: 3 in 67, 0 finer (2/05).
