1910 $20 PR66 PCGS. The gold coinage of this year presents the student with challenges. Mint records indicate a remarkably high mintage for each denomination, substantially higher than for any other year within each denomination. In the case of this largest denomination, the Guide Book reports a mintage of 167 coins, while more recent research by Roger Burdette suggests an actual mintage of 138 coins. It is not known how many of these coins still exist today, with various authors suggesting anywhere from 15 pieces to as many as 50 pieces. It is probably the case that the higher figure is more accurate, but it may be the case that a specific population is never determined.
Proof gold coinage during the 20th century went through several changes or stages, from brilliant proof coins of the Liberty design, to matte and Roman finish coins of the Saint-Gaudens and Indian Head designs. Among these, it is this writer's opinion that the so-called Roman finish pieces are the most attractive and desirable.
This is an exquisite Premium Gem example of the attractive Roman Finish proof gold coinage. The fields are satiny, and very lightly reflective; nearly prooflike in nature. Pristine would be the single word that best describes this beautiful proof double eagle. Every individual detail is remarkably well defined, even including every individual pillar in the Capitol building.
