1910 $20 MS66 PCGS. The With Motto Saint-Gaudens twenties from the Philadelphia Mint for the years 1908 to 1915 are all at least moderately scarce in all grades. The 1910, with a mintage of 482,167 pieces, is not rare in grades below the Gem level, but is a classic condition rarity in full Gem condition. David Akers, in his 1988 20th-Century United States Gold Coins, 1907-1933, writes: "Although not nearly as difficult to locate as the other early Philadelphia Mint issues in Gem condition, the 1910 is definitely rare in MS65, and it takes a little luck and a little patience to be able to find one."
The population reports show a significant drop in 1910 double eagles between the near-Gem and MS65 levels. PCGS and NGC have seen about 1,500 MS64-graded specimens in comparison to approximately 160 or so MS65 pieces. Fewer than 10 Premium Gems have been reported, and none finer.
The typical 1910 Philadelphia-Mint double eagle is very attractive. Akers states: "The 1910 is invariably well struck and the surfaces are always the 'soft' frosty type. Luster on this issue is usually very good (much better than on the 1908 With Motto, 1911, 1913 or 1914) and the color is typically a light to medium yellow or orange gold."
The MS66 coin in this lot displays the usual impressive strike, as evidenced by the sharp detail on Liberty's face, hands, and foot, and on the eagle's plumage. Potent luster embraces both sides, and a classic Kutasi color mix of warm peach-gold, orange-gold, and mint-green adorns frosty, well-preserved surfaces. This original, untampered coin exudes great technical quality and aesthetic appeal, and is sure to delight the new owner. Population: 3 in 66, 0 finer (10/06).
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
