Small Cents 1909-s V.D.B. Small Cent. PCGS graded Mint State 65. Red and Brown. The paltry 484,000 mintage this year created a fine opportunity for collectors, although little did the mint realize this when it released the 1909-S V.D.B. to the eager waiting public nearly a hundred years ago. From the first, people were charmed by the masterful design. Simple though it is, it captures the man's nobility. Many of these first-year San Francisco Lincoln cents were retained as keepsakes, though most found their way into circulation, with relatively few Gem Mint State 65s left in collectors' possession. This is a handsome example with satin-like luster, plenty of glowing mint color, and is free from spotting or tarnish. San Francisco Mint was kept busy this year producing first, the last run of Indian cents, then this V.D.B. variety for the new Lincoln head, then, following a commotion over the designer's initials, removal of those initials and production of the majority of the Lincoln head issue, the 1909-S without the V.D.B.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
