1909-S VDB 1C MS66 Red and Brown NGC. The tan-gold cen
1909-S VDB<1C> MS66 Red and Brown NGC. The tan-gold centers on each side meld into deeper maroons and brownish-golds, showing just a bit too much mellowing to be called fully Red. Both sides of this lovely Premium Gem are notable for an almost complete lack of abrasions of any size. This piece is among the finest graded at either service within this color designation(7/06).
A little-noted paragraph in Sol Taylor's The Standard Guide to the Lincoln Cent points out that the designer's initials "V.D.B." are found in eight combinations on the 1909 Philadelphia and San Francisco issues--from three periods to no periods. The combinations with only one period--VD.B, or V.DB, or VDB.--are the scarcest, according to Taylor. For a challenge, try to collect a P-mint of each variety. For a much greater challenge, try to collect an SVDB of each variety!
