1909-S VDB 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Although Gem Red 1909-S VDBs are available for a price, in MS66 Red their population thins out markedly--by a factor of about 4.5x at PCGS--and specimens in MS67 Red, the finest grade assigned at PCGS or NGC, are both elusive and extremely expensive. This superlative piece offer consistent orange-gold coloration on both sides, with bold luster and essentially no post-strike distractions. A tiny planchet flaw on the obverse rim, beneath the L of LIBERTY, is as made, and visible only with a loupe. The strike is sharp throughout, and even under magnification, contact marks are virtually absent. PCGS has certified only nine piece in MS67 Red (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Victor D.
