1909-S VDB 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Although many other Lincoln cents are rarer in Premium Gem quality, the 1909-S VDB cent is easily the most coveted issue of the entire series. This is a popular "story coin" and its desirability remains at a high level regardless of grade.
When Victor David Brenner prepared the models for this design, he included his initials V.D.B. at the bottom of the reverse. Dies prepared from the models were a true copy of his design. The Philadelphia Mint churned out millions of these coins, and the public soon complained about the initials on the reverse. New dies were prepared without the initials, and millions more were struck in Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, word was sent to San Francisco to discontinue using the original dies and these instructions were followed after a meager production of 484,000 coins, creating a rarity in the new series. Eventually, millions of collectors searched their change for this low mintage issue, and its popularity soared.
This amazing piece exhibits deep orange mint frost with pristine surfaces that are essentially mark free. Only a single tiny spot is noted in the left obverse field, and this is easily overlooked. All of the design elements on both sides of this Premium Gem are boldly detailed. Just nine finer examples have been certified by PCGS.

Coin Engraver: Victor D.
