1909-S VDB 1C MS66 Red NGC
1909-S VDB 1C MS66 Red NGC. Victor David Brenner, a medallist by trade, likely thought nothing of including his name on his design for the Lincoln cent. Early criticism from the Mint led to an inadequate compromise in which his initials appeared at the bottom of the reverse. Even this was too much for many public critics, and later issues had the initials removed, which created the famous key issue from San Francisco.
This attractive example ranks among the most appealing 1909-S VDB cents known today. The impeccably preserved, satiny surfaces display beautiful copper-gold luster with crimson accents around portions of the borders. Strong detail is evident on Lincoln's hair, the bow tie, the lines in the wheat stalks, and on all of the lettering and numerals. A few light flecks on the lower reverse are hardly distracting. NGC has graded just one finer Red representative (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Victor D.
