<B>1909-S VDB 1C MS65 Red PCGS.</B></I> The 1909-S VDB is the cornerstone of 20th-century small cents, and one of the most popular coins of all time. Carl Herkowitz, writing in the November 1995 issue of <I>The Numismatist,</B></I> says: "In a swift departure from the past, the 1909-S VDB, more than any other coin or contributing factor, attracted the attention of the larger populace, and, in so doing, made coin collecting a public pastime rather than an avocation for just a few. The S-VDB set the hobby's course for the 20th century, increasing multifold the ranks of enthusiasts and lending to the enjoyment we know today." Certainly the MS65 Red example in this lot carries on this key date's tradition. Rich orange-gold color, imbued with traces of crimson, accentuates highly lustrous surfaces. Further, a well executed strike has imparted excellent definition to the design features, including the VDB letters and the lines in the wheat stalks. Both sides are quite well preserved.
