1909-S<1C> MS66 Red PCGS. A scrutiny of Guide Book mintage figures will rapidly confirm that the 1909-S has the lowest mintage of any Indian Head cent. Excluding the rare 1856 Flying Eagle cent, technically a pattern, the 1909-S Indian has the lowest mintage of any small cent. Its mintage is about 35% that of the coveted 1877, and about 65% that of its first cousin, the 1909-S VDB Lincoln. In the PCGS MS66 Red designation, less than one-tenth as many survive of the 1909-S Indian as of the S-VDB. Clearly, opportunity knocks loudly here. Mint State San Francisco cents of 1909 are frequently found with the "woodgrain" toning that, to some, detracts from their appearance. S-mint cents with fully Red surfaces, such as this example, are seldom encountered. This coin has superior color to most specimens in the marketplace, a lovely, consistent red-orange, with a couple of faint ticks and flyspecks visible only under high magnification. Only 10 other examples have graded this high at PCGS, with one coin graded higher (11/05).
