1909-S<1C> MS65 Red NGC. The rarest of the three 1909-S cents in Gem Red condition by far, the 1909-S Indian's rarity is confirmed by the combined NGC/PCGS population data. In MS65 Red, both services have certified 174 pieces of the 1909-S Indian, with 16 finer. This compares to 551 Gem Red pieces of the 1909-S Lincoln, with 177 finer, and 870 pieces of the 1909-S VDB, with 211 finer (9/06). Of course the "new" Lincoln was hoarded in considerable numbers, while the "old" Indian cent, with its skimpy mintage of 309,000 pieces, was scarcely given a second thought. This piece shows delectable tan-gold surfaces with a few carbon flecks limited mostly to the obverse. The strike is robust if not full--although the weak first feather is characteristic of the issue--and the four diamonds, the bust point, and shield are all well brought up.
