1909-S 1C MS64 Red and Brown NGC. Lustrous surfaces. B 1909-S[1C] MS64 Red and Brown NGC.
1909-S<1C> MS64 Red and Brown NGC. Lustrous surfaces. Both the obverse and reverse have at least 50% mint red with blushes of violet-brown. The reverse is sharp. A few of the obverse design details are "mushy," a feature probably caused by die wear (resulting from the extended use of the obverse die) rather than inadequate striking pressure. A scant 309,000 examples were minted; by far the lowest production figure of any date in the Indian cent series. Moreover, the 1909-S Indian cent holds the honor of having the lowest mintage of any cent issue coined during the 20th-century; even the celebrated 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent has a production figure more than 50% higher, coming in at 484,000 pieces.
Two examples of this date are included in the present sale, and they appear to have different mintmark sizes or shapes. This specimen has an open mintmark, especially at the bottom with the lower left serif distant from the curve above. The specimen in the next lot has a mintmark that appears to be closed, with both the upper and lower serif touching or nearly touching the nearby curves. We are not aware that these differences, which were first recorded by Jules, have ever been published to date. Envelope Included.
