1909-O $5 MS62 PCGS. The unequivocal rarity in the Ind
1909-O<$5> MS62 PCGS. The unequivocal rarity in the Indian Head half eagle series that is all but nonexistent in Uncirculated grades. One of only 5 New Orleans gold issues of the 20th century, this half eagle has a paltry mintage of 34,200 pieces. Whenever we are fortunate enough to handle one of these coins, it is most often a circulated, polished, or damaged specimen. While we do see the infrequent MS60 or MS61 example, a lovely, Mint State 62 piece such as this quite literally epitomizes a rare opportunity.
A well struck coin, some of the details of the Indian's headdress and the eagle's shoulder display the often-seen striking softness. The O mintmark is also somewhat weak on the lower left side of the reverse, but this is typical of authentic specimens and helps to expose crude counterfeits. The faces exude a lustrous, frosty appearance with a rich yellow-gold hue. A handful of contact marks sprinkled across both the obverse and reverse serve to define the grade. An aesthetically pleasing example of this immensely important issue among gold specialists and New Orleans aficionados alike. Population: 24 in 62, 32 finer (7/06).
