1909-O $5 MS61 PCGS. The coinage history of the New Or 1909-O
1909-O<$5> MS61 PCGS. The coinage history of the New Orleans Mint spanned 55 years from 1838 to 1861 and again from 1879 to 1909. During the final year of its history, the three Barber silver denominations were produced alongside the half eagle, but no other coinage. The building remains standing today, surviving the recent hurricane Katrina with only minor damage. The building easily ranks among the oldest buildings in Louisiana, but it is still a relatively new structure in the French Quarter.
Without a doubt, this is the rarest date in the Indian half eagle series, and also the only New Orleans Mint issue of the Indian design gold coinage, regardless of the denomination. Only 34,500 examples of this date were coined, which was the lowest mintage of any Indian half eagle. David Akers ranked this as the rarest date in all Mint State grades, and the third rarest in MS64 or finer grades behind the 1911-D and 1914-S issues. This is a pleasing example with faint rose-colored gold surfaces and satiny luster. It is sharply struck, including a fully distinct mintmark. Population: 14 in 61, 55 finer (6/06).
