1909-O $5 AU58 NGC. The 1909-O half eagle is the final gold coin produced at the New Orleans Mint, and is the only Indian Head five dollar to be struck at this mint. It is one of the most sought-after issues in the Indian Head five dollar series because of its low mintage (34,200 pieces, the lowest in the series), and its general rarity in any Mint State grade. Douglas Winter writes in his Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint, that: "Examples in VF and EF grades are readily available. Attractive AU coins are fairly scarce and most graded as such by NGC and PCGS are low end pieces with poor eye appeal."
This high-end AU example displays ample luster residing on yellow-gold surfaces. A better-than-average strike occurs on the design features; indeed, the only element that is weak is the mintmark, which is typical for the issue. The few light marks we see are not out of context for a coin that has seen limited circulation. All in all, a pleasing example of this key-date specimen.

Coin Engraver: Bela Lyon Pratt

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
