1909-D $5 MS65 PCGS. Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian half eagle was struck from 1908 to 1916, and again, for one year in 1929. One of only two American coins struck in reduced relief (the other being Pratt's quarter eagle), it is common up through MS64, with the 1909-D the most common. Nearly 3.5 million pieces were struck at the Denver Mint in 1909. One might assume that a coin available in such large quantities would have its fair share of Gem examples. However, critics of the reduced relief design believed the coins would wear more quickly and be more susceptible to marks than those coins with raised relief. Perhaps they were right, as the vast majority of Mint State pieces fall within the lower end due to nicks and dings. This is a particularly well struck example that shows rich orange-gold color with none of the often-seen green patina in the fields. In Gem and higher, the Indian half eagle becomes significantly more difficult. The PCGS Population Report shows nearly 17,500 specimens of the 1909-D graded from MS60 through MS63. They have graded 2,029 pieces MS64, but only 80 in MS65 and five in MS66, with none higher (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
