<B>1909-D $5 MS65 NGC.</B></I> The 1909-D half eagle, with a mintage of 3,423,560 pieces, is the most common date of the Indian Head five dollar series. Several thousand examples have been certified by NGC and PCGS through the near-Gem grade level. After that, the population falls precipitously. Only 130 or so pieces have been given the MS65 designation, and fewer than 10 finer.<BR> Apricot-gold patination is imbued with subtle traces of light green and red, and rests upon lustrous surfaces. A powerful strike makes itself known on the design elements, including crispness in the eagle's plumage. A few minor handling marks do not disturb.
