1909-D<$5> MS64 PCGS. The 1909-D five dollar, with a mintage of 3.423 million business strikes, is the most common date of the type. Walter Breen (1988) indicates that over 1,000 Mint State examples turned up in South America about 1955, and a smaller hoard surfaced in 1976. Over 30,000 Uncirculated coins have been certified by PCGS and NGC through MS64, after which the population takes a precipitous drop. This highly attractive near-Gem specimen displays pumpkin-orange color with subtle accents of lime-green. Excellent definition is noted on the design features; the eagle's shoulder reveals minor softness. Minute marks on the Indian's cheek and in the raised, exposed fields define the grade.
