1909-D $5 Indian
1909-D $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-63. CAC Approved. A nice frosty coin. In late 1908 numismatists, accustomed to the Liberty Head design and unaware a change was being made, were surprised when they first saw one of the Indian pieces featuring a radical new concept. At the suggestion of Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow, a Boston friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, also of Boston, redesigned the motif to picture an Indian head on the obverse and, on the reverse, the side view of a perched eagle. The format of the $2.50 and $5 coins, unique in American coinage, featured the lettering in recessed relief, rather than raised above the surface on the coin. The opposite of regular issues, the highest part of the new design was the field and the lowest was the design itself (PCGS # 8514) .
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,600.
