1909-D $20 MS65 PCGS. Repunched Mintmark. The mintage
1909-D<$20> MS65 PCGS. Repunched Mintmark. The mintage of this issue was just 52,500 coins, one of the lowest in the entire Saint-Gaudens series, although mintage figures, and especially low mintage figures, are not an immediate indication of rarity. Only three issues had lower figures, but about 15 dates are valued at higher levels. Only five finer examples of this date have been certified by PCGS, an indication of just how difficult it is to find a Gem quality example of this date. Regarding Gems, Dave Bowers commented: "Gems are especially rare, and when they come on the market excitement prevails!" Unlike many other issues, it seems that most examples of this date remained Stateside, as few have been found in overseas banks or other locations.
This repunched mintmark variety was first identified by Dave Bowers and recorded in the Norweb Collection catalog, Part III, described as a Large over Small Mintmark. Microscopic examination of the Gem now offered reveals that this is actually a tripled mintmark. This is a lovely Gem specimen with satiny orange-gold color and brilliant luster. Hints of olive near the borders adds eye appeal to this sharply struck example. It is a sharply struck example with few abrasions. Population: 13 in 65, 5 finer (7/06).
