1909-D $20 MS65 PCGS. After more than a million Saint-Gaudens double eagles of both No Motto and With Motto subtypes were produced at the Denver Mint in its initial year, the still relatively young facility delivered only 52,500 double eagles the following year. This limited mintage represents the lowest D-mint Saint production and the fourth lowest output in the entire series. As little as a quarter of a century ago, the 1909-D was regarded as a formidable rarity in Uncirculated grades, but the emergence of a sizeable Central American hoard in 1983 (the details of which are outlined in greater depth on the following MS66) has made the '09-D generally available in grades up to and including the MS63 level. As a quick glance at our auction archives illustrates, MS64 examples also appear with some regularity.
This high quality representative is typically satiny with a rich endowment of reddish-gold color blanketed over each side. Unlike the vast majority of Mint State survivors, there are few discernible marks over the generally placid fields and the major design elements show only minor evidence of contact upon close inspection. The only abrasion worthy of individual mention is a well concealed vertical cut hidden within the leg feathers. This desirable Gem possesses all the ingredients of a 20th century gold classic, an enticingly low mintage and undeniable rarity in top condition. Population: 19 in 65, 5 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
