1909-D $20 MS64 PCGS. Large D Over Small D. Even though 20-30 Uncirculated coins have entered the market over the past 30 years, the semi-key status of the 1909-D has not changed. While these few examples have become available from foreign sources, it is apparent that most of the 52,500 pieces minted were retained in this country and either circulated or were later melted in the 1930s. This is a superior coin that shows rich, original orange-gold and lilac coloration interspersed over each side with soft mint frost that enlivens the original patination. Sharply struck. The mintmark appears to be the much scarcer Large D Over Small D that was discovered and first publicized in the Norweb III Sale. There is a small portion of the small mintmark present still at the upper left. The inner right curve also appears to be present; otherwise, the mintmark is wide. An interesting variant that few collectors are aware of.

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
