1909-D $20 MS64 PCGS. Between a rock-bottom mintage of 52,500 pieces and a poor overall survival rate (with just under 3% of the original mintage certified), the 1909-D double eagle has an insufficient population to meet the strong demand of date collectors. This attractive near-Gem displays lovely wheat-gold coloration and pleasing detail. The surfaces have a slightly cloudy appearance, consistent with the long-term overseas storage that saved many 1909-D double eagles from the melting pot. Despite light, scattered marks and a shallow depression below Liberty's outstretched arm, the overall eye appeal is strong and above-average for the grade. Difficult to acquire as a Gem; PCGS has certified only 20 pieces finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
