1909-D $10 MS67 NGC. When the Denver Mint started prod
1909-D $10 MS67 NGC. When the Denver Mint started production in 1906, it, like the New Orleans Mint before it, began by striking silver and gold coinage. The fledgling Colorado establishment quickly proved its usefulness, and in conjunction with the resurgent "Granite Lady" in San Francisco, it demonstrated by comparison how outmoded the facility at New Orleans had become. In the year Denver minted this attractive ten dollar gold piece, one of 121,540 such examples, America's southernmost branch mint produced dimes through half dollars and half eagles only, and the New Orleans Mint never struck another coin before it was decommissioned in 1911.
Although the spotlight is rarely on the 1909-D eagle when numismatists think of gold coins from that year, it is impossible to deny the remarkable condition rarity of this representative. It is the only Superb Gem of this issue graded by NGC, and PCGS has certified just two examples in this lofty grade (12/06). Interestingly, now Heritage can claim to have offered all three of them, the first at the FUN 1999 sale, and the second (which was pedigreed to the Price collection) at the Morse sale of November 2005. The present piece has vivid orange-gold surfaces and strong, slightly satiny luster. A trace of emerald graces the reverse fields. The strike is generally solid and trumps the norm for this issue, though, as always, a trace of softness affects the hair below the headband and the eagle's talons. The obverse is incredibly clean, and only a handful of tiny marks and grazes on the reverse preclude an even higher grade. Overall, the eye appeal is highly favorable, and this piece holds its own when compared side-by-side with photographs of the Price-Morse specimen. This lot offers a remarkable second chance for those who vied for that piece and a fleeting opportunity for all other interested collectors..

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
