<B>1909-D $10 MS65 NGC.</B></I> Like other gold denominations of the 19th and 20th centuries, the survival rate of ten dollar pieces is low, with the gold recall and mass melting of 1933 a prime culprit. While all Saint-Gaudens eagles are elusive to some degree in MS65, the 1909-D ranks as a condition rarity in Gem and better grades, even though it still does not have a reputation as such outside date collector circles.<BR> The piece offered here is an outstanding representative of this early Denver eagle issue. The strike is solid, and both sides exhibit strong, vibrant luster. The obverse is primarily wheat-gold with a splash of sun-gold at the headdress, while the reverse offers more even apricot-gold coloration. While a handful of tiny, scattered flaws are present on each side, these are minor and entirely consistent with the grade assigned. An immensely appealing example.
