1909-D $10 MS64 PCGS. With a scant mintage of 121,540 pieces, the 1909-D is one of many rarities in the Indian Head eagle series. It is considerably scarcer than the mintage would indicate, and especially so in the better grades of Uncirculated. In their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth recognize the 1909-D ten dollar gold piece as a coin that is difficult to locate in Gem grades. They go on to state that the strike on this date are average at best and the luster is often less spectacular than typically found on previous issues. These observations provide a logical explanation regarding this coin's low population numbers. As of (3/07), PCGS has certified 30 coins at the MS64 level, with only 10 finer. This particular piece has the noticeably granular surfaces that are invariably seen on 1909-D tens. It also displays rich reddish-gold color with subtle accents of lilac interspersed on each side. Sharply defined throughout.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
