1909 Christy Mathewson Wire Photograph by Thompson, Type 1. The black armband ringing Matty's left sleeve allows us to date this amazing image exactly to the tail end of the 1909 season. This first ever use of a memorial armband was instituted to mourn the suicide death of National League president Harry Pulliam, who shot himself after growing increasingly despondent over criticism linked to his handling of the Merkle incident and other controversial decisions. This sepia-toned image is one of the finest we've seen of the Hall of Fame Giants pitcher, dating to a season that saw him post a career-low 1.14 earned run average. Thompson stamping on verso. Very minor creasing at upper edge does not distract. 5x7". Confirmed as "Type 1" by PSA/DNA.
