1909/8 $20 MS66 NGC. This is a sensational Premium Gem
1909/8 $20 MS66 NGC. This is a sensational Premium Gem example of the popular overdate variety, and it is tied with a small number of other coins as the finest example of the variety to be certified by either NGC or PCGS. In 1909, the Philadelphia Mint produced a total of 161,282 double eagles, and it is estimated that about half of those coins, or about 80,000 pieces, were examples of the overdate variety. Such a mintage seems to be consistent with the viewpoint of many that just one overdated obverse die was made and used. This die was made when someone at the Mint's die shop began with a 1908-dated hub, then used a 1909-dated hub for the second impression. While such a scenario seems unlikely, it is the same scenario that resulted in every 20th century overdate variety. The number of overdated obverse dies produced for the double eagle coinage in 1909 is not known, although it is unlikely that more than one such die was created. The variety was first identified by Edgar Adams who made a report in the May-June 1910 issue of The Numismatist. Years later, Abe Kosoff "rediscovered" the variety in 1943, and a year later it was listed in the Standard Catalogue of United States Coins by Wayte Raymond.
This example is a spectacular representative of the overdate variety, with all aspects of the design boldly detailed. The surfaces are exceptional and fully lustrous with amazing eye appeal. Both sides are frosty and nearly pristine. Simply a great coin, and one which any collector should be delighted to own.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
