1909/8 $20 MS65 NGC.
1909/8 $20 MS65 NGC. The 1909/8 has long enjoyed a place of honor in U.S. numismatics as the only overdate in the popular and widely collected Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. Several hundred examples surfaced in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s, but the vast majority of those coins were circulated to one degree or another. Even the coins that were Mint State, like most Uncirculated survivors in today's market, grade no finer than MS63. Gems are of the utmost rarity, and there are just 23 examples certified MS65 by NGC and PCGS combined, with a mere 10 finer (3/07).
This issue has a peculiar "look" for a P-mint double eagle struck in 1909. Since the obverse die was leftover from the 1908 No Motto series, the design elements on that side are not as sharply detailed as those on the 1909 perfect date examples. However, we stress that this lovely Gem possesses ample evidence of having received a powerful strike from the dies. Both sides are fully lustrous with a rich, frosty texture that highlights the rich orange-gold coloration. We are hard pressed to find more than one or two scattered bagmarks on both the obverse and the reverse; but, if we had to select a pedigree marker, we would use a horizontal scuff at the top of the sun on the reverse. We cannot overstate the importance of the present lot among advanced gold specialists, and this coin that is fully deserving of a premium quality bid. Census: 9 in 65, 7 finer (5/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
