1909/8 $20 MS64 PCGS. Although discovered in 1910, the variety was promptly forgotten until the 1940s, and today it is a popular (and pictured) Guide Book variety. The prevailing numismatic view is that the mintage of this issue was about equally divided between the normal-date and overdate pieces, but the overdate carries a substantial premium, a factor of its unceasing demand. That demand is created in part because of its status as one the only Saint-Gaudens double eagle overdate. Although some proclaim the so-called "1853/2 overdate" in the Liberty Head series while others doubt, regarding the status of the 1909/8 there is no doubt. The variety was created by a double hubbing error, i.e. a die was hubbed at least once each from 1908- and 1909-dated hubs between annealings, or hardenings. Even today, most Mint State coins found are in the lower echelons. This piece boasts intense luster emanating from khaki-gold surfaces that show few distractions of any kind. The bold strike further boosts the appeal. Population: 76 in 64, 18 finer (1/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
