1909 50C PR65 Cameo PCGS. After the Mint's brief
1909<50C> PR65 Cameo PCGS. After the Mint's brief experiment with the no-contrast method of proofing a few years before, the striking of subsidiary coinage returned to the deep mirror effect used prior to 1902. Curiously, in 1909 the Mint used two proofing methods and continued this two-track method until 1916. As mentioned, lower denomination coins were deeply mirrored in the fields, but gold coins received the new, European-influenced matte process. The obverse of this piece is mostly brilliant and there is a moderate degree of contrast between the fields and devices. The reverse is toned a rainbow of colors with deeply mirrored fields underlying the coloration. The devices on that side are obviously heavily frosted in spite of the toning. An exceptionally lovely Gem 1909 half dollar. Population: 6 in 65, 16 finer (3/05).
