1909 $20 PR66 NGC. When the new gold coin designs were introduced in 1907 and 1908, the Mint also experimented with special finishes for the proof issues. Most years from 1907 through 1915 witnessed a variation on the matte proof theme, although in 1909 and 1910 the Mint issued proofs with a satin finish, sometimes called a "Roman finish." It is just such a coin that we offer here. Just 67 of these coins were minted and distributed to the few interested collectors. In terms of relative monetary investment, collecting proof gold was no easier in 1909 than it is today. For the average person, an annual investment of more than 20 dollars a year to collect these pieces was just not possible. Similarly today, the average person would have a hard time spending six figures a year to acquire pieces such as this coin. Proof examples of this date are extremely rare and infrequently offered, although we have offered seven examples for auction sale in the last two years. Prior to that, we had handled just seven others over a quarter century of auction sales.
This lovely Gem is plated on page 79 of Proof Gold Coinage of the United States by Robert J. Loewinger, M.D., published in 2003. It has extremely sharp design details on both sides, as expected. The surfaces have bright lemon-yellow color that provides exceptional aesthetic appeal. A few minor rim blemishes along the left side of the obverse are almost certainly the result of an aberration in the minting process. Although a few finer examples of this issue have been certified, this highly attractive coin should easily meet the demands of the exacting connoisseur. Census: 10 in 66, 4 finer (10/06).
From The Dr. Robert J.
