1909 $20 PR66 NGC. Struck in the Roman Finish as opp
1909<$20> PR66 NGC. Struck in the "Roman Finish" as opposed to the darker matte finish seen on earlier years, these extraordinary double eagles were issued in limited numbers. In fact, the Philadelphia Mint reports that a mere 67 pieces were coined for the entire year, a sum which could easily have been produced in an hour. Sales to collectors were slow, as the prior matte finish proved unpopular, and orders for these imperial coins remained slow. The "Roman Finish" produced lighter yellow-gold with the surfaces showing a fine texture. No longer were fields reflective in their nature, but instead blended with the devices instead of contrasting. For identification purposes, there is a short lint mark within the long feathers of the forward eagle's wing, roughly in the middle near the base of that device. A similar faint line exists left of the base of the Y of LIBERTY on the obverse. One of the most difficult dates to find in Gem grades or higher, and this one is certainly in the top quarter of those produced for the technical condition and quality of preservation. All proof gold coins from this period are truly the caviar of American numismatics. The coins represent the finest in minting techniques, and when found in Gem grades, they retain the eye appeal intended to represent the coiner's art. Although pricey in any market, obtaining a collection of these proof gold coins is a formidable task requiring not only patience but persistence. A coin worthy of any specialized collection and one of the prizes of this current auction.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers.
