1909<$20> MS66 NGC. A satiny Gem that is bathed in yellow-gold luster and magnificent eye appeal. The strike is typically strong, and the surfaces are uncommonly clean for this date. Although available in lower mint state grades from MS60 to MS63, the number of coins graded really drops off for this date when the MS64 level is desired. To obtain a Gem coin is nearly impossible with a total of 27 reported in the combined NGC and PCGS Population Reports. The real stopping point for this date is MS66, where a half dozen have achieved this recognition from the services, with none seen finer. An impressive and exciting coin to view for the glorious luster and satiny clean surfaces, particularly so given the rarity of this date. As with so many of these early Saint-Gaudens double eagles, those that did survive were found either overseas in foreign bank hoards, or held by the American banks. Coins from either source tend to show extensive handling marks and very few Gems survived to represent these dates. Here is an extraordinary exception, and it is possible that this particular coin was set aside at the time of issue by a numismatist and preserved. This particular auction will provide the double eagle specialist with many opportunities to obtain some of the finer examples known of key dates to the Coronet and Saint-Gaudens issues. As always, such opportunities must be seized as coins on this caliber are seldom offered.

Importa
