<B>1909 $20 MS64 PCGS.</B></I> If current numismatic estimates are correct, then approximately 80,000 examples of the 1909 non-overdate double eagle were produced. This statement assumes that around half of the total mintage consisted of 1909/8 overdate coins. If these assumptions are true, then it is not surprising that the 1909 has remained a conditionally scarce issue, as befits its presumed status as a low mintage issue in the Saint-Gaudens series. This near-Gem example is well struck and lustrous, with a bright, satiny appearance and attractive green-gold toning.
