<B>1909 $2 1/2 PR65 NGC.</B></I> This is a well preserved specimen, struck in the so-called "Roman Gold" proof finish of this year, and exhibiting much sharper details on the critical design areas than any business strike would display. The attractive, light, even coloration reveals a subtle two-toned effect between the fields and devices, with the latter showing a yellow-gold hue, while the fields project a slightly olive cast. The obverse appears pristine, while a few trivial mint-made marks are noted on the reverse: below UNIT, to the right of WE, and beneath TRUST. Numismatic authorities like Walter Breen, David Akers, and Doug Winter agree that this issue is rarer than the mintage figure of 139 pieces might suggest, and rarer in proof than the 1908.<BR><I>From The Dr. Robert J.
