1909<$2 1/2> PR64 NGC. From an original mintage of a mere 139 pieces, and extremely scarce. This appears to be the first example offered by Heritage in almost five years.
In 1909, the U.S. Mint changed its procedure and ceased using the "sandblast" style of 1908, which had proven unpopular; switching to the so-called Satin proof, which is perhaps more commonly referred to today as the "Roman Gold" proof finish.
The flawlessly defined features are illuminated by bright proof luster, with modest reflectivity in the fields. The coloration is a pleasing amalgam of yellow, gold, green, and khaki. A few faint pinscratches and wispy hairlines, in the reverse fields, preclude a finer grade designation, but, as a near-Gem proof example of this early issue the coin remains an attractive and highly desirable choice.
