1909 $2 1/2 PR63 PCGS. Among proof Indian quarter eagles, the greatest conditional rarity is the 1909. PCGS has certified only a single specimen above PR64, and that piece is graded PR65. The 139-piece mintage of the 1909 is substantially less than adjacent years. The 1908 has a proof production of 236 pieces, while the 1910 has an aberrantly large mintage of 682 proofs. Nonetheless, one suspects that indifferent Mint preparation or handling of the 1909 proofs is the cause of its unusual conditional rarity. The 1909 has a Roman finish slightly brighter than the strictly matte texture 1908. As expected, the strike is precise, but the surfaces are surprisingly smooth, and only intense inspection can locate a few completely trivial hairlines. Population: 18 in 63, 11 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Bela Lyon Pratt

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
