1909 1C VDB PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. Mostly Red with e
1909 1C VDB PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. Mostly Red with enough fading to warrant the Red-Brown category. Examination discovers scattered minute specks of carbon on both sides, one behind Lincoln's head IN, on the reverse the specks are minute, but the largest is on the lower right wheat ear on the right of the third seed pod from the bottom. A shadowy scuff is found on the lower left reverse which happens to be in the shape of a 6.
When the new Lincoln Cent was introduced, it immediately proved quite popular with the public. However, there was one complaint, that being the initials of designer Victor D. Brenner, which were placed prominently at the base of the reverse, including on these 1909 Proofs. Ever willing to please, the mints removed the initials from later 1909 business strikes, creating a single year type coin for later collectors. The present example is one of the finer Proofs to survive, and should be considered by those who demand Premium Gem quality and attractive surfaces. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (1/06).
