1909 1C VDB PR65 Red PCGS.
1909 1C VDB PR65 Red PCGS. The actual number of proof cents struck in 1909 is subject to some dispute. In our opinion, the 420 pieces that Breen reports as the official mintage is probably the most reliable number since Walter was sent to the National Archives by Wayte Raymond in the early 1950s specifically to research mintages of U.S. coins. Also, that figure seems to be more in line with the number of survivors than the Guide Book's figure of 1,194 proofs. What is undisputed about this issue is its extreme rarity in Gem condition and especially with the full red mint luster intact. This is a glowing, original example that has bright orange-red color on the obverse and slightly deeper, even cherry-red luster over the reverse. Exceptional overall quality and conservatively graded, this piece is clearly suggestive of an even higher grade. Population: 6 in 65, 9 finer (10/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
