Breen states that 420 pieces were struck of the VDB variant and 2,198 of the "plain" 1909 cents. The <I>Guide Book</B></I> lists 1,194 proofs made of the VDB cents, and 2,352 examples without the designer's initials on the reverse. Since Wayte Raymond sent Walter Breen to the National Archives in the early 1950s specifically to research the mintages of U.S. coins, we will defer to his figures. Also, experience has taught us from handling many matte proof Lincolns over the years that the VDB coins are at least five times scarcer, as the mintage would indicate, rather than twice as scarce as the <I>Guide Book</B></I> would lead one to believe. We suspect other dealers who have also handled these pieces would concur, and the population data from the grading services also bears out this disparity between the two issues. This particular coin has the fine-grain surfaces one expects from a matte proof and it is intricately detailed, also as one would expect. The surfaces are a bit bright, but still uniformly red over each side with a few minor contact marks and flecks of carbon that account for the grade. Population: 4 in 64, 10 finer (4/03). </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>09/26/1998</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$3,910.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>11/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$3,910.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
