1909<1C> VDB PR64 Brown NGC. David Lange, in his Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents, states that: "Proofs of this date and type are often difficult to distinguish from currency strikes; this is particularly true for examples which have been cleaned at some point, and this applies to the majority." He goes on to cite the American Numismatic Association Authentication Bureau identification markers of known 1909 VDB proofs, though not all genuine coins may show these. Included are diagonal polishing lines in front of Lincoln's nose, a diagonal die scratch below the letters TY in LIBERTY, and a small crescent-shape die chip to the right of M in UNUM. This near-Gem possesses all of the above diagnostics. Its matte-like surfaces display a mix of gold-orange, tan, steel blue, and lavender patina, which on the reverse is somewhat dull. One of just 420 pieces struck. It is recommended that the prospective bidder personally inspect this piece, as the toning may not please all tastes.
