<B>1909 1C PR65 Red and Brown NGC.</B></I> The 1909's proof emission is generally recorded as 2,198 pieces, although the <I>Guide Book</B></I> offers a figure of 2,352 coins. This example offers the same fine-grained matte surfaces found on the 1909 VDB cents, a feature found only on a minority of the 1909 pieces. The diagonal die scratch from the rear of Lincoln's coat, below TY in LIBERTY, confirms that this piece was struck from the same proof die as the 1909 VDB pieces. The beautiful brick-red surfaces are near to a Red designation--although the obverse highpoints show tinges of jade-green--and visible carbon is absent.
