1909 $10 PR67 NGC. This is an exceptionally rare proof
1909 $10 PR67 NGC. This is an exceptionally rare proof gold coin, with only 74 specimens struck in this year of issue. It has been variously reported that between 7-9 and 20 proofs still exist. Akers uncovered only 13 appearances in auction over the decades he surveyed for his work on the series. We believe the number of pieces extant to be somewhat higher and estimate that perhaps 30-45 pieces may still exist. The proof process for this year and the next is the enchanting Roman Gold finish. This gives the coins a bright, satiny appearance with light color, obviously quite different from the traditional, darker matte finish. (Breen noted in his Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Proof Coins that two 1909 coins are known that exhibit the matte finish that was also used on most 1908 proof eagles.) Roman Gold Indian eagles are very rarely seen today, and infrequently appear at major auctions.
The surfaces of this piece are bright and satiny and, as the grade would indicate, there are no mentionable marks or flaws that might be mentioned as identifiers for future research. The reddish-golden coloration is enchanting, and is one of the most noteworthy attributes of this particular piece. A rare opportunity for the gold specialist to purchase a Superb Gem example of one of the most elusive proof Indian eagle issues at this lofty grade level. Census: 4 in 67, 1 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
