1909 $10 MS66 PCGS. For 1909 only eight obverse and nine reverse dies were used to strike 217,235 ten dollar gold pieces. As Roger Burdette points out, "Of the coins made at the Philadelphia Mint, a whopping 32,446--nearly 18%--of the eagles struck were defective in weight or striking. This must have kept the roomful of lady adjustors busy, individually weighing and inspecting each gold coin as they came from the coining room." The net mintage for 1909 was a modest 184,789 pieces, but the overall quality of the issue was quite high. This piece shows the usual satiny finish and it also displays the rich rose and lilac patina that is common to most of the coins from the Kutasi Collection, and yet so uncommon on gold coins in general. Sharply defined throughout with finely granular surfaces, the coin is virtually defect-free. An outstanding example of this rarity in the ten dollar Indian series--only 11 other pieces have been so graded by both PCGS and NGC and a mere five coins are finer (10/06).
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
