1908-S $5 MS66 PCGS.
1908-S $5 MS66 PCGS.<p>The scarce 1908-S Half Eagle has always garnered much attention due to its first year status and its comparatively low mintage of mintage of 82,000 pieces which ranks third in the series behind only the 1909-O and 1911-D. Unlike the conditionally scarce S-mint issues that follow it, the '08-S is actually one of the best produced Indian Half Eagles and can, with a little patience and a bit of a bankroll, be acquired in Select Mint State or better condition. That aside, the 1908-S Five Dollar Indian offered here is an extraordinary coin. The satiny luster is unbelievably vibrant and basically undisturbed by contact with other coins. Both sides combine a pale olive-gold color with delicate accents of pinkish-orange that are unmistakably original. On the central devices, there are a pair of tiny, unobtrusive alloy stains on the Native American's headdress and on the eagle's wing and back leg. Population: 13 in 66, 6 finer (10/01).
